Website Optimization Secrets - Book Review

I got sent a copy of "Website Optimization Secrets", a book by Andrew King.

My two cents:

I do wonder about books on SEO. They're often dated the minute they are published, and there is a wealth of information about SEO available online. So why bother publishing a book?

Pros: If it's precise, technical detail you're after, you'll enjoy this book. Ajax Optimization? Covered. Optimizing CSS? Covered. This book bridges the gap between SEO, web marketing and website performance tuning. The book's other strength is the way it ties together a number of related areas - including SEO, PPC, site performance optimization and metrics - and encourages the webmaster to take a holistic approach.

Cons: Because it covers a number of bases, there was always the risk it was going to come over a bit light in certain areas. Hardcore SEOs and PPC managers are unlikely to find a lot new in the specific chapters dedicated to these areas.

Aaron Walls '50 Kick-Ass Keyword Strategies'

I've received a review copy of Aaron's new e-book, entitled "50 Kick-Ass Keyword Strategies". You can pick up a copy from Wordtracker for $39.00

Aaron needs little introduction. His SEOBook.com site is one of the most authoriative SEO resources on the net. If you're not reading his blog already, you should.

In his new e-book, Aaron shares a lot of clever keyword ideas, observations and insider secrets. For example, No 42: Beware The Business Bias Of Search Engines. Aaron talks about the practices search engine use to squeeze maximum profit out of top search terms, and illustrates why you need to be extra vigilant when bidding in business-related keyword areas. I like number 36: "Optimize For Things That Don't Exist". I hadn't though of that tactic before!

Some of these tips will be familiar to you, I'm sure, but those who know all 50 will be head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to targetting their keywords correctly, both for SEO and PPC. This e-book is pretty much an SEO course in itself, and a course well suited to SEO in 2008.

Needless to say, I recommend it :)

New Search Engine...That Is Actually Useful!

I often receive emails telling me about a new search engine. Unfortunately, most don't make any improvement on the established options.

This one is actually useful.

It's called NewsFlashr. It's a meta news engine - with a sense of humour.

How Does Google Deal With Duplicate Content?

Many web publishers deal with content theft. It can be frustrating to
have your work scraped and republished - and worse - have that content plstered with ads and outranking you!

So how does Google deal with the problem?

Interesting article:

"When encountering such duplicate content on different sites, we look at various signals to determine which site is the original one, which usually works very well. This also means that you shouldn't be very concerned about seeing negative effects on your site's presence on Google if you notice someone scraping your content".

They don't explain the "how", but it's nice to see they are addressing this issue. Anecdotally, this does appear to be less of a problem now than in the past.
