Don't step on the tail

In recent months, the new buzz-word being thrown into just about every sentence is "the long tail". What dat den? Here's a definition, but the short of it is this: "marketers should learn to focus more on the less popular". I also quite liked this definition: "The Long Tail is the 80% of stuff that didn't used to be worth selling". YahooBlog also has a commentary on the Long Tail today.

SEMs probably know about this instinctively. If a keyword term receives ten visitors a day, then that's great! Write a page about it, and do the same for all those other niche terms that "only" receive ten visitors a day. It all adds up.

SEM is the ultimate long-tail activity. We find those niches, all those babbling brooks, and turn them into rivers of traffic. Please excuse my mixed metaphors :)
