We're all grey hats now, eh. Interesting thread examining this Google patent.
There's all sorts of tracking going on measuring how useful a user finds a page - highly likely a combination of toolbar, destop search, adsense etc. There's also footprint analysis regarding links. WebGuerrilla calls it the most important SEO document of the last five years.
Hmmmm.....my question is: what is this document doing out in the wild, really? Is this really patent worthy? It's either confirmation of a number of theories, or a red herring. WMW also discusses this aspect.
