Streets of London

Those who claim to be behind the bombing state "here is Britain burning in fear, terror, and fright in the north, south, east and west".

Hardly.

A day after the bombing, and it's business as usual. Here's a photo (above) of Wandswoth High Street I took a few minutes ago. People are travelling, shopping, doing what they usually do.

I think this defiant pic sums up the prevailing attitude. After all, London was bombed relentlessly during the blitz, and by the IRA during the 80's and 90's - it's going to take a lot more this to derail London. A woman on the news demonstrated the admirable stoic attitude many Londoners have: "the risk from terrorists is very low - you run greater risk dodging London traffic on a normal commuter day!".

This is a great city.

Ken Livingston, London's mayor also made a defiant speech yesterday:

"Innocent people going from all of London's communities have been targeted by this indiscriminate attack. I urge Londoners from all of this city's diverse communities and faiths to support one another and stand together against terrorism.I want to say one thing: This was not a terrorist attack against the mighty or the powerful, it is not aimed at presidents or prime ministers, it was aimed at ordinary working-class Londoners, that isn't an ideology, it isn't even a perverted faith, it's mass murder. We know what the objective is. They seek to divide London. Black and white, Muslim and Christian, Hindus and Jews, young and old. It was an indiscriminate attempt to slaughter, irrespective of any considerations for age, class, religion whatever. I know that you do fear you may fail in your long term objective: to destroy our free society. And I will show you why you will fail. In the days that follow, look at our airports, look at our seaports and look at our railways.Nothing you do, however many of us you kill will stop that life ... where freedom is strong and people can live in harmony ... whatever you do, however many you kill, you will fail".

There's a London explosion photostream here.

PS: Thanks New York :)
