Battelle has a point about Microsoft: "How can a company innovate against the likes of Google and a thousand Web 2.0 startups when it has to worry about Windows and Office integration? Short answer: It can't".
That was certainly my experience when I went to Redmond. I met a lot of briliant people who work there, and then couldn't figure out why the products are often uninspiring. The machine probably crushes the life out of them - the machine is risk adverse.
