Skrenta Roasts Mahalo
Rich Skrenta has a few things to say about Mahalo, including this gem:
"at first glance making this spruce goose fly looks like it would need David Copperfield plus a reduction in the universe's gravitational constant."Now, contrary to what many SEOs think, I'm of the opinion Mahalo will make money. I'm guessing it isn't going to be the huge thing Calacanis thinks it will be, but then again, I wouldn't want to bet against him, either - a point Rich also makes. I've often wondered if Mahalo will end up being more applicable in the mobile search world, and that's where Jason will eventually take it.
Rich states that this SEO-style play has all been done before, and points to DMOZ as a model for the potential problems Mahalo will surely face i.e. linkrot and irrelevance.
Jason talks a little about DMOZ in his reply to Rich (see comments), and outlines some of the differences between spring chicken Mahalo and the roasted turkey that is DMOZ.
However, I think some of what he says shows a level of misunderstanding:
" Sadly, DMOZ has been taken over by SEOs these days."
In reality, DMOZ hs been taken over by a small cabal of self-important administrators, who answer to no one but themselves. If DMOZ were answerable to their base, they'd still have a worthwhile directory.
