Mike
Grehan, apart from being a knowledgeable marketer
and repressed stand-up comic, is as mad as a box of
spanners. We got a write up in Larry Chase's Web
Digest For Marketers, which is (it sez here) "something
of an honor, as for every site we review, ten are rejected".
Well, gosh! Here's what Mike (who,
for reasons best left unexplored, was dressing up as
Larry for the day) had to say:
"Search Engine Blog
Teach a man to fish, and he'll eat for the rest of
his life. However, give
him a "Blog" about search engines, and the
"old so-and-so" will sit on his
lazy arse and let someone else do all the industry research
for him! It's a
good job, and my friend, the extremely affable and considerate
Peter Da
Vanzo, in New Zealand, doesn't mind doing the spade
work for all of us. Not only that, he's quickly become
the veritable "chat-show host of Blog". Tune
your browser in to Peter's daily musing of the search
engine industry for some wry comment and interviews with luminaries such
as... er... me (oh, all right, and important search
engine people as well). Get the omnibus edition mailed
to you at the end of each week. Gud onya sport. (that's
New Zealand for "splendid chap - well done"
New Zealanders will, of course, be
able to spot that Mike can't tell the difference between
a New Zealander and an Australian, but never mind. Thanks
for the mention and write up - much appreciated :)
From Larry's digest, this useful
.pdf on implementing linking strategies.
Finally, an "amusing" story
about thin
ice.

Yahoo
strikes back, launches new search engine. In order
to beat Google, Yahoo have erm...become something very
like Google. Find out how in this tour
of features. The search results are still Google from
what I can tell, although the link
provided yesterday suggests there is something new in
the works. Nice interface and features, will be interesting
to see what happens to the serps. Source: WMW
If this article is true, it reveals
just how much business Google
is doing per quarter: 150m.
Finally, screenshots
from the "balanced" Fox News channel had it
been around throughout history.

Microsoft
set their eyes on the search market and ousting
Google, although they haven't yet said how they intend
to do it.
Some criticism of Google news for
accepting
press releases. Hmmm...just like many other news
outlet, then? Nothing new here. The obvious problem
with automated news feeds is that unworthy press releases
may be given precedence due to the problems inherent
in the ranking mechanism. High PR, or article popularity,
does not necessarily make for interesting reading. Solution?
Change the channel - read
the Independent.
Finally, war
on iraq poster exhibition.

We continue our Pay-Per-Click masterclass.
This
week: Keyword Selection. Excert - "You need
to look a bit beyond keywords, for starters. "One
big dump" of key phrases all tied to a single ad
is not nearly as good as organizing these around a wide
number of carefully written ads that correspond more
closely to a small group of key phrases...."
Google and
Amazon snuggle up. Amazon
licenses Google technology
Customers can search Web without leaving Amazon site.
Office
of Fair Trading to investigate PPC price increases.
Finally, the
poetry of Donald Rumsfeld.
