Salon "meet(s) Mr anti-google". The title is a bit misleading, however it is to be expected that Google will attract industry watchdogs due to it's prevalence in the market.

Article on paid listings vs traditional seo.

Looks like the Amsterdam Search Marketing conference is cancelled. Reasons cited: "ongoing blood bath hitting the Dutch IT industry.....prohibits us from further pursuing the Conference project at this point in time". The conference may be rescheduled to March, 2003.

Former Lotus Notes mainman Ray Ozzie obviously loves weblogs. The cynical may suggest he likes inbound links even more. In any case, Ray declares publishing dead.

We put a search engine on our site a couple of days ago. While it was intended for searches on this site only, a few have used it to search for other, curious, things. One of the searches was for the term "post modern marketing". We love that! We're going to aim for a number #1 on Google for "post modern marketing" :)

And finally today, RIAA website "hacked".

That man Sullivan on the Google/Ask Jeeves alliance. While many in search circles refer to Danny Sullivan in hushed, reverential tones otherwise reserved for the Pope, or Cliff Richard, we've decided to refer to him from this point on as "that man Sullivan". Not that we have any less respect for the top man in search, we just like to brighten things up.

Yahoo's fingers extend to pies new. Details on the DSL offering.

We've mentioned this one before, but take a look at the Google page rank calculator. A means to cross check that little green bar if you happened to, oh, place a text ad of some kind ;)

And finally today, Satirewire bows out. Dick Cheney not involved.

Teoma appears to have updated.

Fredrick Marckini, head of iProspect, discusses search engine optimization from a marketing strategy standpoint. We've said this before, and leading lights in the search industry agree, that technical optimization is on it's last legs. However search marketing, with clear, measurable ROI, is the natural successor and will surely be huge. Watch this space...

AskJeeves to power the Beehive, a scheme that provides internet services to low income communities.

And finally today, satellite tracker finds Goose in freezer.

To Google toolbar or not to Google toolbar, that is the question.

A site dedicated to search tools.

And finally today, subvert a gas tank.

And finally, finally we've dug through our masses of fan mail (most of which seems to be offering lucrative deals in Nigeria) and noticed a particularly eloquent piece from a self-proclaimed site optimization expert "Paul". He has scoured our site and kindly informs us that we clearly know nothing about site op as we're linking out all over the place, leaking page rank and quite possibly about to cause Internet meltdown. "Are we insane?" he asks, helpfully.

Quite possibly, we reply, but wonder what that has to do with anything?

Perhaps he should read the Cluetrain Manifesto. Perhaps he should realize we cater to humans, not bots. Well, that's not strictly true - we're search engine friendly and can be found under the only phrase that really matters to a site such as this - its name.

Optimization is an important part of online marketing, but it isn't the be-all-and-end-all, and certainly should not dictate usability and content imperatives. This site is for humans and we want humans to read it. Paul has provided eloquent proof, at least in one instance, that we've succeeded :)

We're often mentioning Webmasterworld.com in our daily roundups. That's because if you're a webmaster interested in search marketing, this is one essential site. Today the keen eyed webmasters have spotted Yahoo descriptions replacing Google descriptions on Yahoo. Self-reflexivity gone mad? The FTC may regret wading into this arena ;)

Enter the Google quiz. The winner gets to take a look at their ranking algorithm. Or a school bag. It's one of those two ;)

And finally today, September 11 creates opportunity for carpet salesmen. And owners of 1970s panel vans.
