Google junkies are going to love this - will Google introduce slideshow SERP's? An Instant site reputation service wereby comments are annotated to your listing? Check 'em out at Google labs

Sergey Brin is talking at the SuperNova conference. Check out their conference blog . Interesting snippets: Google reportedly working on accepting XML-RPC pings whereby sites are instantly crawled on update. Good for the blogging world, eh ;) (Witness further mad scramble of copy-cat SEO's setting up blogs, yelling "what the hell is an RPC ping !?! ;)

Also, says Sergey "If you look at the other search companies that didn't do so well, you'll see that in many cases they hired an executive team that consisted of CEOs...that didn't use the Web that much".

Overture UK make a surprising move. "No keyword submissions where the monthly search volume is less than 5 searches per keyword will be reviewed". Ammon Johns, of WebMarketingPlus, is less than happy about the situation.

Apparently, this move is due to a deluge of advertising requests that Overture can't keep up with. As Ammon points out, "one editor for every 730 advertisers! Frankly, that is nowhere near good enough". Indeed. Read Ammons analysis of the Overture UK development.

The top searches at Lycos this year were about Tattoos and Japanese cartoons.

And finally, a drunk Santa game. Use the arrow keys to move.

The Google dependency debate goes mainstream. The New York Times had this to say "Sergey Brin, one of Google's founders and its president of technology, acknowledged that Google's large market share can leave Web site owners vulnerable to fluctuations in traffic. But he was unapologetic about Google's success and its emphasis on keeping users happy, even at the expense of Webmasters. "The only reason people come to Google is because it works for them," he said. (Thanks to Bill for the tip).

And finally, the best 404's ever.

We've received a lot of great feedback about our Mike Grehan interview. Keep it coming. On that note, we have little choice but to link to this. And this (see 12/6 entry).

Speaking of Ralph, I'm stealing this one from him. (See Danny Sullivan's article on relevancy). "Danny Sullivan predicts that the major search engines had better come up with a new, generally accepted standard or see themselves subjected to some other agency doing it to them"

And finally, spammer can't take his own medicine. Maybe he'll soon be flooded with sympathy cards also...

Chris Riding has some of his own "suggested guidelines" for Search Engines. Hilarious. Webmasters, let's be careful out there.

No to be outdone, Ralph provides his "Ten Commandments".

Continuing on the hilarity theme, today we feature an interview with the incomparable Mike Grehan. This interview will almost certainly offend some viewers, and have the rest rolling in the aisles.

Stop the press (what "press"?). That man Sullivan gives his views on the Google SEO guidelines.

We've sold out! We'll, sort of. You can now sponsor our site, which will help keep us in Ferraris, fine wine and upmarket accommodation. Or perhaps cover our mounting web traffic bill. The sponsorship will be unintrusive, text based, relevant to y'all and exist peacefully in that blue panel to the right. Editorial will not be compromised! No sir! (By the way, Drink Coke - it's the Real Thing!).

Where were we....it's December already! Where has the year gone? One minute Looksmart are restructuring their terms and conditions, now they are restructuring in the UK. BT & Looksmart joint venture dissolves. What next, we wonder?

And finally, UFO's in European Art.

5 December 2002

Does seo = spam? The new Google guidelines have put a fat cat where the pigeons hang out. Cre8asite launch into a no holds barred discussion.

Inktomi's Index Connect announces strong growth leading up to the holiday season. Look's like this holiday season is going to be a stunner for online sales, eh?

Shopping sites rely on traffic from search engines, namely these: Google, Yahoo, MSN and AOL. Erm...perhaps that should read Google, Google (mostly), MSN and Google.

And finally, Legodeath. A history of execution in plastic format.
