More
on Inktomi's WebSearch 9. That man Sullivan puts
the new offering under the microscope.
Yahoo
reports strong revenue and earnings. "The Web
portal reported a fourth-quarter net profit of $46.2
million, or 8 cents a share, on sales of $285.8 million
for the period ending Dec. 31, 2002. That compares with
a net loss of $8.7 million, or 2 cents a share, and
revenue of $188.9 million during the same period in
2001". Will search engines kick start the NASDAQ
this year?

Christina Buu-Hoan's site provides
intelligent commentary on the search engine marketing
world. In this article,
Christina looks at the power of Google.
Kartoo to release a site
search beta.

More
on web standards. Zeldman weighs in and suggests,
as we did yesterday, that the W3C should "shuck
off its modest, academic shell and begin selling the
community on the benefits of and thinking behind the
spec it is now calling XHTML 2".
Isn't Bowling
for Columbine a fantastic movie.
And finally, Google
question.

Google's
gaggle of problems. An interesting article describing
the challenges Google faces in 2003. This is the point
where the nice tech idea comes face to face with ruthless
market forces. Forget PageRank. Start thinking supply
and demand.
Semantic
obsolescence. The W3C and web standards get a firm
kicking. It's time for the W3C to come down from the
ivory tower and put a marketing hat on.
Finally, content
is crap.

Turns crank.
Nothing.
Turns crank
again.
Splutter. Whir.
Various engine related noises. The blog springs into
life. Hello 2003! Hope you all had a great holiday.
I drank too much, ate too much and lay about too much.
Which was grand. But now, back to work.
I see that absolutely nothing has
happened in the search engine world in my absence, except:
Whatever next? Well, that's what we
aim to find out. It seems that every jumped up hack
at this point starts making a list of predictions. Quite
frankly, we think that's a bit naff, but we're going
to make one anyway. Here's our top ten predictions regarding
events that simply WILL NOT HAPPEN in 2003:
- Google will please everybody, all of the time.
- Someone called Jill will start a cloaking forum,
and recommend that everyone "spam the hell outta
search engines".
- There will not be a major IPO by a major search
engine. Instead, they will start a hippie commune
and just "be good, man".
- SearchEngineBlog will fail to get one e-mail regarding
secret Nigerian bank accounts
- That man Sullivan will give up search engine stuff,
and start worshipping Mike Grehan full-time.
- Someone's penis will actually "permanently
increase by between 2 and four inches" as a direct
result of a spam e-mail.
- No search commentator, anywhere, will make any picks
regarding what 2003 has in store.
OK, so that wasn't quite ten predictions,
but we got bored. Anyway, roll on 2003. It should be
a damn interesting year, search-wise.
