The FTC wants search engines that take money from web sites in exchange for prominent placement to clearly state that those listings are paid advertisements.

In our opinion, regulation is long overdue.

For example, let's examine Looksmart results. Looksmart serves "Featured listings" (actually paid listings) and "Reviewed websites" (also paid listings). There is no mention on the results page that these "results" are actually paid advertisements. Other search services named in the report include AltaVista, AOL Time Warner, Direct Hit Technologies, iWon, MSN and Lycos.
