Webmasterworld
announce PubConference 5. Saturday September
20th, 2003, 1pm to whenever, London, England.
This is so funny - dot.com
parody (read carefully). And true!

Anyone who has been around here for
a while has probably heard me banging on about one
of my favourite search marketing analysis tools ClickTracks.
It's clever stuff, and it's just got even more clever
with the release of version 4.0, which includes dedicated
ROI tracking for Overture and AdWords. I'll be experimenting
with the new features and hope to write a review in
the coming weeks. (Disclosure - that's an affiliate
link, however I'd be happy to recommend ClickTracks
regardless).
New search engine NetNose.
Encourages users to rate sites, which in turn affects
ranking.
Amazon
gets into the search market. Sort of. They are
undertaking "an ambitious and expensive plan
to assemble a searchable online archive with the
texts of tens of thousands of books of nonfiction".
Google
includes advanced search feature in news section.
And here it
is.

My guest this week is Sean D'Souza.
Sean looks at why
customers can be so indecisive and what you can
do to help spur them along. There's also a related
article "Are
Your Headlines Missing These Precise Psychological
Triggers?". An interesting read for those
looking to further their copywriting skills.
Why
Google should be worried. Yahoo & Microsoft
are banging on the gates.

The Overture buyout obviously puts
all eyes on MSN. Will
they buy Looksmart? Ask Jeeves? Danny Sullivan
has some thoughts on
the subject.

The big news
is the search engines are partying like it's 1999. Yahoo
shells out for Overture. This raises
the stakes for Google & MSN. Discussion here.

Very
interesting analysis of the new Google patent and
what it may mean for SEOs in the near future. External
citation may become even more important.

My guest this week is Barry Lloyd
of MakeMeTop.
Barry steps us through his Inktomi
optimisation strategy and explains why it works
so well for other search engines too.
Ye olde place-competitor-brand-name-in-the-meta-tag-trick
takes a new spin. Some marketers are bidding
on well known brand name keywords on Google AdWords,
and reaping rewards.
The blog world peace-and-love fest
comes to an (inevitable) end now that money is involved. Should
we RSS? Should we Echo? Who knows....who even cares?
The jockeying for position at the food trough between
the vendors is far more interesting.
Sean D'Souza tells us how
to write better headlines.

Mainstream
media miffed at Google cache. Took a while.
Looksmart, in a fierce bid to claw
back the massive Overture/Google PPC lead, introduce
a "woo-baby-these-cats-are-lucrative" initiative.
From the rather-big-news department: Microsoft
doesn't have enough brain power, so buys some in. "Since
Yahoo acquired Inktomi, Bill has decided we need
our own capacity.... the company is already patenting
new algorithms it believes have the potential to
power a new search engine".
Forget DMOZ, here's something really
useful: dWoz. Superb
webmaster focused directory.

Last night
I had the pleasure of speaking with the very affable
John Marshall of ClickTracks. John stepped me through
the beta version of ClickTracks 4.0, which includes
some great ROI tracking features. Those of you managing
AdWords campaigns are going to love it. I'll be writing
a more formal review when the beta is released sometime
in the next few weeks.
Jakob explains
how Google
makes people leave your site faster. Elasticity
is the new sticky.
Bloggers
Gain Libel Protection . Good news for anyone
in the web publishing game.
Also had the pleasure of meeting
searchengineblog reader (and top Unix bloke) Rob in
the pub last Friday. Not really news, just thought
I'd say so :). Also hi to Shak who promises to buy
me a curry - which I will certainly be holding him
to. MakeMeTop, if you're out there, please get in touch
:)

Ammon Johns
talks about landing

in real terms - conversions and sales.
Microsoft,
Google may go head-to-head. "May"?
Pie charts show the distribution of unique users

Missed this
one earlier this week: Morgle (which
doesn't sound anything at all like Google) pairs
a phone number to a URL. Telemarketers excited. archives
