What do Leonardo DiCaprio and Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin have in common? No, Larry & Sergey haven't starred in any crap films and Leonardo, to the best of our knowledge, hasn't been tweaking the PageRank algo. Apparently they are all young and influential.

Can you feel it? We're in the zone now people.

Oh, alright - we'll stop being so dramatic. The next Google index update should happen soon. Brett from Webmasterworld provides a nice chart tracking the index upheavals. Includes essential moon cycles.

Microsoft tops Google hell rankings. Relevance? You be the judge.

Looksmart extend deal to supply some results for MSN. Also to deliver results to AltaVista directory. AltaVista directory?!? Oh, just checked, they do indeed have one. How exciting.

Incidentally, a search for "search engine news" on MSN turns up an online casino, epilepsy information and MP3 Download Central. Leading search news suppliers such as SearchDay and Search Engine Watch don't actually appear until page two. The SERPs are a mess.

SearchDay continues it's look at MetaSearch engines. They highlighted this one called Flipper, which we featured a few months back. Good for diving deep, so appropriately named.

History will remember three great wars: world war one, world war two and, finally, the search engine wars. From that site, New Yorkers Google check potential love interests.

Yahoo may confound the skeptics. The company is shining brighter on Wall Street due to a decreased reliance on ad revenue.

Rocketinfo is a useful news search engine. Claims to include over 5,000 news resources.

New search engine www.philbot.org . Still under development, this engine asks users to vote on the relevancy of results. Thanks to Ralph for the tip. Thanks again to Ralph for featuring searchengineblog in his monthly newsletter.

SearchDay takes a look at Meta-search engines. Apparently 86% of web users don't know what a meta search engine is.

Information may want to be free, but the Chinese government wants to chain it to a tree and poke it with sharp sticks. An article about how Yahoo got into China and why Google and AltaVista hit a brick (fire) wall.

Fast is now indexing Flash content. Fast have integrated the Macromedia Flash Search Engine SDK 1.0, which has the capability to read text and links.

The problems at the Daypop news engine are due to insufficient disk space. Daypop should return within the next couple of days.

Hotbot UK have switched from Inktomi to FAST.

Alltheweb have some new advanced search options. Nice. This is a tidy design with excellent usability.

Alltheweb is starting to attract wider media attention. It looks like search engines are focusing on their ability to provide up-to-date news as a key point of difference.
