The latest Google update has created quite a stir. Naturally this has resulted in two camps at Webmasterworld: Google is good and Google is horrible.

Big Media conducts a "test" on leading search engines in order to determine who is the most "relevant". Guess who got top marks? The answer will surprise you.

And finally today, Viking Kittens. And the compelling case for regime change.

Update!

Big media discovers how search engines work. Apparently it has something to do with links ;)

Google: can the Marcia Brady of Search stay sweet? (part 2).

Stats: newly released search engine usage report from Jupiter Direct. The report costs, and we can't say we've read it or advocate it, but we we're interested in the assertion that "businesses are allocating more time and money toward search engine marketing than ever before".

And finally today, make your own George W. speech.

More on the Google news engine. Human editors not worried.

Webmasterworld points to this article, noting that Yahoo will supply news in RSS format.

The observant amongst you will notice a change in our logo. This was designed by one of generous readers, Sophie Best - web designer to the rich and famous. And now us. Needless to say we think it's fantastic!

We don't do advertising but we're happy to recommend services we believe in. If it's great design you're after, from a responsive, friendly company then talk to Sophie at Nitrogen Interactive.

And finally today, Microsoft to outsmart open source?

A look at the commoditisation of news. Article suggests that perhaps the media giants, including Google, should team up. The article also points out that editorialising will remain a human function. You don't say ;)

And finally today, the music of David Hasselhoff is "rediscovered". (Scroll down to the reviews).

Ammon Johns looks at the ins and outs of tracking search engine visitors, and other referrals, via a JavaScript cookie. Also takes a wider look at tracking and log file analysis. An excellent resource for search engine marketers.

Googles news site is ready to roll. The new Google service claims to grab news from over 4,000 sources.

And finally today, disturbing search requests in referral logs. Some language may offend... oh, you know the drill :)

AlltheWeb have extended their competition deadline. Design a CSS interface and be in to win an Amazon gift certificate.

Google talk about web services and look to the future.

Yahoo extend their service offering with a fee-based gaming-on-demand system.

A privacy complaint against FAST/AlltheWeb in Norway.

It appears that SpamAssassin thinks our newsletter is spam, so if any of you haven't seen our newsletter recently, it's possibly because your filter is blocking it. Apologies - it's our own fault really. We shouldn't mention phrases like "opt-in", "casino", or "Nigeria" (Doh!). To get round this problem, the newsletter will now be written entirely in Latin. Thanks to Ralph for the alert.

And finally today, some very odd jobs indeed.
