Microsoft
roll out MSN beta, which is a less cluttered version
of the previous incarnation. Paid search results obviously
more lucrative than banners.
MSN caught in bizarre cloaking scandal.
It has been reported
that petty MSN have been detecting Opera browsers and
purposefully serving a broken page. Opera has responded
by translating the MSN page into Bork, the language
used by the Swedish chef in the Muppets. Users report
that the MSN site now makes a lot more sense.
Google
goes Public. Or maybe not. The red Herring looks
at the issues surrounding a Google IPO.
The
Chesire cronicle (!) is "outraged" that
Google contains some undesirable content. No, we're
not talking about endless discussions on ethical seo,
we're talking child p*rn. The response from Google is
interesting - "we cannot exclude material on the
internet from our index". Cannot?
Google
as big brother? Google watch makes the case, in
spider friendly format.
"The
search space is hotter than Charo". This article
looks at the search industry musical chairs, and predicts
major upheaveals shortly. Top of the list : MSN may
look for a closer relationship with Looksmart, given
that Yahoo are now banking Inktomi's cheques. Or perhaps
MSN might buy AltaVista?
No interviews again this week. Perhaps
the marketing people at FAST and Looksmart have bigger
fish to fry? ;)
And finally, unhappy
valentines. Happy Friday :)

Christina Buu-Hoan takes
apart the specious argument of "ethical"
seo. "Equating ethical SEO practices with those
that are search-engine-compliant isn't simply a misunderstanding,
it's dangerous".
MSN slowly wakes. MSN makes moves
to streamline
search offering.
Finally, Gulf
War 2. Sadly, not even remotely funny.

News sites settle
pop-up law suit against Gator. The nature of the
settlement is sealed.
Webmasterworld will be having their
next pubconference
in Boston. Saturday April 26th, 2003, Boston Massachusetts,

Usability corner: people
don't mind scrolling any more.
Google
named brand of the year. Less is more.
Finally, crab
vs pipe. Pipe wins.

Nine out of ten high profile search
industry commentators recommend Teoma to get shirts
whiter than white. Or find stuff. This article
looks at Google's dominance, and possible contenders
for the SE crown.
We've heard a rumor that there will
be some major change in the search world shortly. Our
guess is that FAST/AlltheWeb is involved. That's all
we know. Really.
Yahoo
and Cisco team up for a service "that supports
the integration of networking technologies to sharpen
the competitive edge for Web-based and brick-and-mortar
businesses". We have no idea what that means either.
The
folly of conditional css. Jeffrey Zeldman launches
rockets at MSNs compatibility issues.
And finally, the
distribution of links on the web scales according
to a power law. There is only so much time to link.

Ralph
notes that Overture's price rise is now official.
"This self-declared "moderate price increase"
amounts to nothing less than a price increase of 100%
- if that is supposed to be "moderate", it
begs the question what would qualify for exorbitant
(if not downright usury) in Overture's view".
Overture
profits down as costs spike. Distribution partners
pocketed a bigger portion of revenue.
Is net surfing
a dying sport? This report
notes "the percentage of users arriving at a site
via a search engine has increased to 13 percent from
8 percent last year".
Popdex.com
- the website popularity index. Check citations regarding
your site, see if you're in the news etc...
And finally, Workspot
- A Linux GUI via a browser.
February 07, 2003
A stunning
thread exploring the marketing potential of blogs.
Amazing analysis, passion, drama. Oh, ok - I started
it. Am I barking up the wrong tree? Is there ever a
right tree to bark up? Shoot me down in flames at cre8asite
(And no, we're not selling out! BTW Drink Coke, it's
the Real Thing)
Lycos
cuts staff, possibly unleashing a wave of unemployed
"reverse engineers" onto the market.
No interview today. Hopefully next
week.
Overture
ups minimum bid prices in the UK and there is speculation
that they may up them in the US shortly, thus making
Google AdWords look just that much more attractive...
It's
a cloak, but is it deceptive?
And finally, North
Dekota found to be harboring Nuclear missiles.
