If you are wondering how to choose a baby nursery theme then there are a few factors you may wish to consider before reaching for your checkbook.
Pink Or Blue
People generally fall into two camps when it comes to knowing in advance the sex of their unborn child. There are those who want to and those who don’t. Nobody really wants to be messing about with paint and wallpaper with a new baby in the house so knowing in advance can make planning a bit easier, particularly if you are a pink or blue kind of person! Though it may be worth bearing in mind that your pink theme may not work quite so well for the little brother who arrives next or vice versa.
If you prefer not to know, then choosing a more neutral unisex theme may be a more sensible approach.
Branded Or Not?
There are many famous and even household names in baby décor such as Glenna Jean Baby crib bedding. There is a design and label advantage to going for ‘the name’ but it may be worth looking around, as sometimes household name products can carry a higher price.
How Often Do You Want To Redecorate?
Children grow up very quickly indeed and opting for a very babyish theme may mean that you are signing yourself up for some serious redecorating in the not too distant future.
Boy or Girl
A rocket, trucks, dolls and bunnies, all feature heavily in many baby nursery themes. However liberated we may like to think we are and however irrational it actually is, choosing a pink doll based theme for our new bouncing little baby boy may just be a step too far for many of us.
Neutral Doesn’t Have To Be Boring
A more neutral theme could offer more flexibility as your child grows up. Those cute little pink bunnies may become very wearing after a very short period of time and for your baby too.
Babies can spend a lot of time in their crib and not just sleeping or crying. Your baby needs constant visual stimulation when awake and your nursery theme can easily provide this.
A neutral, plain theme can offer an easily maintainable background for mobiles, posters and other eye-catching features. These can obviously be changed as your baby changes to keep abreast of his or her development.
So rather than stereotyped ‘baby themes’, designs featuring the alphabet or based on animal themes may offer more flexibility and provide those needed stimuli for your baby.
Two Final Points
Always remember that babies have a habit of ejecting lots of, well, ‘matter’ from various orifices of their bodies! It may be a sensible precaution to make sure that all your nursery bedding is machine washable. Pre-children, hand wash only items may have been workable or even chic options. As the parent of a new baby, you may find that such items can turn into a nightmare.
Cribs, which can convert to little beds when the time comes, can be a good idea.
Depending on the size of your child, you may be able to use them until your child starts school. Take the advice of the manufacturer though on the maximum weight the mattress should ideally support. The body of a small child needs to be supported to ensure the healthy development of organs and bones. As the child grows and gets heavier, the mattress must be able to comfortably and healthily support this.
