Kitchen Cabinets- What To Consider

If you think that a kitchen cabinet is just a box on the kitchen wall you put things in, you should probably try and find a few minutes to have a look in your nearest kitchen showroom!

Ok, a long time ago the nearest thing in most kitchens to a designed storage area was the pantry with a few DIY shelves inside. Those days are long gone though and today’s kitchen cabinets are high-tech sophisticated pieces of furniture.

Modern Kitchens

This isn’t just being pretentious either. In many of today’s homes, the kitchen is a smaller and more compact area that it may have been previously. Space is at a premium and the need to ‘engineer’ the use of that space to the maximum effect is of paramount importance.

Why? Hopefully it goes without saying that cooking is a lot harder in a kitchen that’s poorly organized and with insufficient storage. Using artistry to create a culinary masterpiece is not easy at the best of times and in cramped and cluttered conditions it can be virtually impossible.

Not only that but if you have a thru kitchen-diner, you may have to ask whether you’d be comfortable with your guests seeing a situation in your kitchen that’s chaotic and resembling an untidy teenager’s bedroom.

The big challenge in a kitchen is being able to put things away so as to leave your work surfaces as tidy and uncluttered as possible. This is where the modern kitchen cabinet ranges deliver their benefit. There is a vast range of choice available from freestanding units to completely fitted kitchens. They can guarantee to use every square foot of space in your kitchen to the maximum effect and you can finally get those pots, pans, jars, bottles and even some appliances, stored away and out of sight until you need them.

The choice of modern materials and finishes is also staggering. Units now come in every conceivable color and they can be made of plastics, wood, steel, stones, and tiles or just about anything else. The kitchen has changed from being a utility area for the production of food into a room that is an integral part of the house and its overall ‘look’.

DIY Kitchen Renovations

Yet this change has brought with it a new fact of life that’s important to understand for anyone that’s not naturally gifted at DIY.

Although many modern kitchen units come in flat packs and are ready to assemble, actually working out exactly what’s best for you to get the best effect is far from easy. It may still be possible to fit 1-2 additional cabinets in a kitchen based on common sense and a little experience, but if you’re contemplating anything more significant you may need to be realistic in terms of your abilities.

Once you have a space that you intend to fill with multiple units, the kitchen designer and/or kitchen design software could save you a lot of trauma.

Be careful about roughing it all out on a piece of paper beforehand thinking “it’ll all be OK”. You may get lucky but if you don’t, you could end up with at best a mess and at worst a financial disaster.

Spending a few dollars on a good designer may be a very sensible investment. In fact, some companies and outlets offer kitchen design services free if you’re buying through them. Many also offer you free access to their Internet based on-line kitchen design programs. You can plug in your measurements taken in the kitchen and hey-presto, up will pop your kitchen design for you. You can then sit there and customize it to your heart’s content just changing colors, placements and unit types etc.

There are now many magazines offering advice and help on kitchen cabinet selection and there are even more web sites doing the same. Having a look at them could be your first step towards turning that empty and awkward corner in your kitchen into a useable space.
