A dot.com leading a rally on Wall Street ? "Yahoo!’s third-quarter earnings exceeded Wall Street’s estimates, with revenues rising 50 percent from the same period one year ago".

At the other end of the food chain: Yahoo is great, Yahoo is evil. Mixed reaction to Yahoo's serp changes over at Webmasterworld.

Google suggests webmasters use the "if modified since" header.

Googling your e-mail. Sort of.

And finally today, the half-bakery (Tip: subscriber Sophie)..and the best retraction ever.

Are Yahoo changing their search results? Last night, it was reported that the Yahoo results were all Overture/Google, however the results reverted back to normal after two hours. Beta testing? *Update: Google remain, SERPs altered.

Here's some of the phrases people have used on this sites' search engine in the past few weeks: "democrats", "kids", "mama", "new jersey" and "satan worship". Nice to know we're hitting our target audience.

Google "explains" new ranking algo. And still loves blogs.

"Ethical" search engine optimisers declare that having a web site is now considered spam. We may have made that up.

Investors await Yahoo's third quarter results.

And finally today, ferocious toilet research.

Well, it's time for our weekly feature: "ask the search engines a leading question". (OK, we've never had this feature before). Nevertheless, here goes:

When we type in the query: "which is the best search service?", Google came back with: "Google"

Yahoo came back with: "Microsoft" and "Google" (cunning answer)

...and Looksmart came back with: "Cleaning and Maintenance - Franchise Solutions - entrepreneurs can search this directory for such franchise opportunities as cleaning services, dry cleaning, lawn care, and home improvement".

SearchDay brings up ye olde search engine industry standards debate (you may need to search out the appropriate date as it appears the url does not remain fixed).

Ye-even-older themes debate rages again at Webmasterworld.

And finally today, beware trojans bare-ing (ha!) gifts.

Discussion about the Google catalogs.

The by-line (in really small type) from Googles news service reads : "This page was generated entirely by computer algorithms without human editors". Just for the record, searchengineblog.com was generated entirely by humans. Or one hundred monkeys with typewriters. Hard to tell sometimes.

This one is kinda old (one week) but we'd thought we may as well point it out: Googlefight . Reminds us that it's all just a popularity contest.

And finally today, modern living

Google considering charging for some services.

Looksmart announces figures that surely mean something to someone. We're interested to note how off-topic click-thrus, often deemed to be a negative elsewhere, are actually considered a major selling point at Looksmart.

We like the news but we miss the editors. More journalistic reaction to the Google news service.

And finally today, the Internet broke last week. Apparently.
