New
Search Engine: Mooter. Sort of like
Kartoo.
Some
race horses are great, others
are pet food: Looksmart
aims to change business model.
Again.
Seems that the existing business
model i.e. "launch IPO during
silly season" no longer
has legs. Strange,
that.
Can
you spot a serial killer:
Or a computer programmer?

France
1 - Google 0: A
French court fined Google €75,000 for allowing advertisers
to link text internet advertisements
to trademarked search terms
and gave the company 30 days
to stop the practice. Google
plans to appeal.
On
the radar: online
narcotics in the spotlight.

a few thought-provoking
points about

Bought
out: ValueClick
buys CJ.
Vapourware: Microsoft will do
search bigger
and better. Believe it when
we see it etc....

Google
doing stuff. Again: Google
introduce
free
conversion tracking tool on
AdWords. Google also introduced
"expanded broad
matching" - to
mixed reviews.
Tell
me - what is this "search
marketing" of which you speak?: Yahoo
beats estimates sparked
by a "red hot internet advertising
market". And they're not
talking banner ads.
Read
closely: Personalisation
has become an ever more important
part of search, so says
Eric Schmidt, Google's chief
executive
officer. "The primary mission
of Google is to get you what
you want, rather than what
someone thinks you want".
There's a message in that for
everyone.
No surprise
to anyone: Industry
pundits speculate that Google
IPO may be pushed forward given
that Microsoft are about to
come stomping
into the space.

The
fat lady sings:
Looksmart
loses Microsoft deal.
October

Life
after death: Looksmart
are "aiming
to be the new Switzerland" with
their new(er)
PPC offering. How this
plays out is anyone's guess.
When does that MSN deal come
up for renewal?
Frustration: Like
many, Cory Kleinschmidt at
Traffick wonders when
DMOZ will be put out
of it's misery.
Quote: "The
Open Directory is under a heavy
load right now. Yeah
right".
Don't
give up the day job (Actually,
please
give up the day job): Bush
unleashes poetry of mass destruction. Well,
a dog did eat a shoe.

Getting
personal: Google
buys Kaltix. Kaltix
were working
on personalised
and context-sensitive search.
Needless to say, Andrew "I'm
not really sure how PageRank
works but that won't stop
me" Orlowski uses this event
as
an
opportunity to jump to all
manner of wild
conclusions.
New
blips on the radar: Guestbook
links dropping out.
Also rumoured
that pages entitled links.html
are for the chop. Reciprocals
next?
Can't
beat 'em, join 'em:
Terra
Lycos to distribute Googles
context sensitive
ads.

Evil: Clickz article looks
at MS in the search
market. The leverage
MS has isn't just the marketing
approach, or even MSN. It
is the fact they own the
on-ramp and can build search
in at the deepest
level. Won't happen? They've
"leveraged" before, and they'll
do it again. See September
22 blog.
New: IBM
launch context
sensitive search.
Hangover: WMW
Pub Conference ends. War stories
start...

Change: Dealtime
rebrand as Shopping.com.
Evil: Microsoft
are "very serious about
search",
and we're not talking
MSN. The most telling part
of this
article is: "Long-term,
all roads lead to Longhorn".
If (once) that happens, how
long before we switch off the
lights and announce " game
over"? Search will surely
become as
"competitive", and
about as interesting as operating
systems and Word (TM) processing?
