Search Engine Submission

Find out which search services you should submit to, and those you don't need to.

The truth is: you don't need to submit to the major search engines. They will find you.

Instead, what you need are a few links to your site. The spiders will follow these links and, so long as your site is crawlable, you should be included in the search engine indexs.

It is a good idea to submit your site to directories. Directories, such as Yahoo! Directory, don't use spiders to find sites. Directories rely on manual submissions. Sice imply locate the Add URL form, pay the fee (if appropriate) and the directory editors should let you know when your site is accepted.

So why are there so many submission services?

Often, these services are a relic of a by-gone era when webmasters had to manually submit their websites. However, some search engine submission services can provide a useful service in that they enable you to get your site listed in various small search engines. Whether those search engines will bring you traffic is another matter entirely.

Carefully check the list of search engines they will be submitting to and see if there are any worthwhile engines (i.e. regional sites can somethimes benefit from being included in regional search engines). Also, some of these services are little more than email harvesters. Be careful about giving out your real email address.
